Fruit and vegetables are an important part of your daily diet. They are naturally good and contain vitamins and minerals that can help to keep you healthy. Vegetables and fruit also contain other compounds, antioxidants or phytochemicals, which help protect the body against cancer, diabetes and heart disease. There are many varieties of fruit and vegetables available. Eat five kinds of vegetable and two kinds of fruit every day for good health.

Vitamins are organic food substances found only in living things, i.e. plants and animals. They are essential for our bodies to function properly, for growth, energy and for our general well-being. With very few exceptions the human body cannot manufacture or synthesize vitamins. They must be supplied in our diet or in man-made dietary supplements. Some people believe that vitamins can replace food, but that is incorrect.

It may help to realize, according to dietitians, that fruits and vegetables are actually good buys, if you consider that they are nutrient-dense, containing many of the vitamins and minerals we need more of–for example, vitamins A and C. But the foods we often buy in place of them–cookies and chips, for example–usually offer more of the nutrients–fat and sodium, for example–that most of us should eat less of. And the cookies and chips aren’t cheap.

Gone are the days of the boring banana, apple and orange. With the huge selction of fruit available to us now, there’s no excuse for not getting our vitamins! There are a lot of different kinds of vitamins you can have in your body for example vitamin A helps your eyes to see better and carrots gives you that nutrition, vitamin B helps you store and release energy from your body and green vegetables gives you that nutrition, vitamin C keeps your body tissue strong like your gums and muscles and oranges gives you that nutrition, vitamin D keeps your bones strong and healthy and milk gives you that nutrition, vitamin E also keeps your body tissue like your skin, eyes and liver and wheat gives you that nutrition, and vitamin K clots your blood when you get cut and dairy products give you that nutrition.

Vegetables act as excellent sources of distinctive kinds of vitamins. Vitamins also tend to get lost due to the cooking technique used to prepare food. Eating vegetables high in vitamins goes a long way in improving your health fitness. Some vegetables appear to be gaining vitamins-at least vitamin A. Carrots, for example, have more of the vitamin now than they did in 1963. Why is a mystery. But the phenomenon has apparently occurred just in the nick of time. The National Academy of Sciences has issued an alert that it takes twice as many vegetables to get the daily requirement of vitamin A as previously thought. Carrots and pumpkin are exempt from the caveat.
