Vegetables have differing qualifications than fruits to pick the best piece of produce. Beets, one of the sweetest vegetables in the world, are considered at their peak of freshness when the greens are still attached to the head, colorful, and not wilted. A benefit of beets is that the greens are actually edible as well and can be prepared as any dark, leafy vegetable. Broccoli is best when the head is compact and dark green, rather than yellow and spread out. Zucchini, summer squash, and cucumbers should be shiny, firm, and without blemishes. Corn, a summer staple, is freshest when the husk is still green and tight.
It is time to make smoothies. Even children, who wouldn’t give a second glance to raw fruit, can usually be beguiled by a smoothy. It is also a special treat for adults, an easy thing to do for visitors who drop by, when it’s too hot for tea. Any ripe fruit can be used, even if it is slightly overripe, as long as it still smells good and not fermenting. You get a mega-dose of vitamins, plus calcium from the yoghurt and milk, almost a meal in itself. Healthy eating in a glass.

Wine punches are fantastic for a party. They make a light fun drink for showers and outdoor events. There are so many combinations for creating a great wine punch. They can even be a centerpiece with their pretty colors and attractive garnishes. You can add fruit juices, club soda, ginger ale and other types of alcohol like brandy or liqueurs. Blueberries have one of the highest levels of antioxidants. They also have neuroprotective properties that help to protect cells from chemical, trauma, and plaque damage. Along with that they help slow age-related memory loss, Alzheimer’s, and senility.
Tomatoes are fragile in the beginning. Growing a tomato from a seed and harvesting fruit in the same growing season takes advance preparation. If you prefer not to gamble with starting your own seeds, many companies offer mail-order seedlings of endless varieties. Plan for your seedlings to arrive for planting once the danger of frost is completely past. Tomato plants are tropical in origin and have little tolerance for cold.
